Vidal Blanc
This fruity white wine is refreshing and delicious. These grapes were grown in Ashtabula County by our long-time friend, Larry Laurello. If you are ever in Geneva, Ohio, please stop by his winery. You will NOT be disappointed. Tell them Vino di Piccin sent you.
The Vidal Blanc grape is widely used to make the famous “Ice Wines” since they are able to hang on the vine well into the winter.
Side Note – To make Ice Wine, the grapes must hang on the vines through a “hard freeze” and must be processed while still frozen. In Canada, the temperature has to be no higher than 17 degrees F. In the US, the grapes must freeze naturally to be called Ice Wine; otherwise producers can use “cryoextraction” or mechanical freezing to simulate the effect of hanging on the vine through a freeze. If cryoextraction is used, the wine cannot be called or have the Ice Wine designation. It is sometimes called an Icebox Wine. The fermentation process is very slow, sometimes taking several months. Fermenting wine in a cooler environment results in fruitier notes in the wine.
At slightly less than 2% residual sugar, it is considered semi-sweet.
